Staten Island is one of the five boroughs that make up New York City. It is the least populous, with around 470,000 residents, and is the most suburban. The well-known Staten Island Ferry provides free transport between it and Manhattan, and it is connected to Brooklyn by the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, which was the longest suspension bridge in the world until 1981. The Staten Island Railway and MTA buses provide the bulk of public transportation within the island.
